i always wondered what isb did with all the computers they throw away each week year. now i know.they send them to akto. of course it takes like 50 years for the stuff to ship from brunei to athens so right now the computer lab at my university has isb's computers from, like, 500 BC.ok seriously, the computers at my uni are ancient. they don't even have cd-hole things. and i'm not quite sure how to turn them on either. i walked into the room all 'let me at the macs! grr grr snarl' and was faced with giant lumps of plastic all crowded into a tiny room. yeah.that's my school, yo. *points proudly at the tall, skinny building squeezed between dirty alleyways*
here at akto, we like to say our building has 'character'. the interior designers were going for a 'raw, industrial' feel.
the graphics design students are shoved into the shittiest building out of all the akto departments. and our building is located in omonia. for those of you who don't know athens... let's just say when i did my night classes my friends were freaking out."OMG OMONIA?! BUT THERE ARE DRUGGIES! AND HOOKERS! YOU'LL BE ATTACKED, KANNA!"it wasn't as bad as everyone thought it was. the druggies stay inside mcdonalds and the hookers have zero interest in a scrawny little art student. but it still sucks. sof's building is all minimalistic and white. it's also in an area filled with cool cafes and some of the best clubs. tina has this marble-and-glass school which looks more like a freaking boutique hotel lobby than a computer school.but that's what you get for going to art school, yeah? you know why art students are so damn poor? because we spend all our money paying for classes. we can't even afford to buy our supplies for school - and those are expensive too.
wahhh you know in brunei my mom used to buy me a new pack of faber castell colour pencils EVERY school year? the previous set of pencils would be almost brand new but, as you all know, nothing is better than a new set of colours. and every kid knows you NEED 6 shades of brown. so off my mom went to buy me the faber castell pack with 56 million colours. then i come here and it's like ... 50+ brunei dollars for the set of 36. faaaaaak! and don't get me started on the paints and styrofoam and special drawing paper and bags of glitter and foam balls and sharpeners (which i keep losing)... it's insane.
it's gotten to the point where i have decided to cease buying my art materials from the so-called 'student artshop' next to my building. discounted prices MY ASS.
instead i shall make them all myself. i have thought this through and made a list:
paint: grind rocks, flowers and babies' toenails to form fine powders. mix with water to create paint. am also considering chipping bits of paint off bus-stop signs, park benches and people's fences... then melting the paint flakes down in the microwave and bottling them for my personal use.
drawing pencils: used cigarette butts. it's like charcoal, but comes in menthol as well.
paper: steal the newspapers that the homeless sleep under and through the method of paper mache, recycle it into new drawing paper.
i really think i'm going to enjoy my second year. *thumbs up*
